A guide to dramatic, hassle-free smile transformations with porcelain veneers in Chevy Chase, MD

In the capable hands of Drs Erick Hosaka and Valerie Cassis, chips, gaps, deep discoloration, worn-down teeth, and otherwise irregularly shaped choppers can be transformed, naturally, with durable and tooth-like dental porcelain. Due to our exceptional skill at Health 360 Dental in Chevy Chase, MD, we can restore worn bonding or veneers designed unsatisfactorily at other dentist’s offices to healthy function and a lifelike appearance. So, porcelain veneers at our office are indistinguishable in form and function from natural and healthy teeth.

Veneer basics for one-of-a-kind smiles

Porcelain veneers are thin layers of this dental ceramic, which is prized for properties that mimic natural tooth enamel. Dental porcelain is also stain-resistant and very strong. The veneers are placed on the front surfaces of each tooth to be treated. Once the veneers are secured to the front of each natural tooth, they cover up imperfections ranging from extra spaces between teeth to slight cracks.

To make room for the veneers on the teeth (so they don’t stick out too much), a small amount of enamel is removed from the natural tooth. Modern veneers are so thin that very little enamel is lifted from the tooth. The more natural tooth structure that we can save, the better the outcomes from dental procedures. Additionally, minimal alteration of the tooth supports a more comfortable treatment experience. So, most patients do not need to have a numbing anesthetic to manage discomfort or tooth sensitivity.

Veneered teeth can be cared for like natural teeth with brushing, flossing, and visits to our office for professional cleanings and exams.

Veneers

Veneers are thin handcrafted porcelain shields worn on the front of the tooth which improve the appearance of teeth that are chipped, cracked, stained or worn. Veneers are thin as contact lenses, and are an aesthetically pleasing option of closing gaps, lengthening teeth, and providing symmetry to make your smile more natural. Veneers are intended to last for many years without changing color. They are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in dentistry. Ask your dentist if veneers may be right for you.

The process

All treatments, veneers, and otherwise, start with a dental exam. We will need to resolve underlying oral conditions before moving forward with treatment. It’s important to discuss problems that can damage veneers from the get-go; for instance, patients who grind their teeth should have oral appliances or night guards customized to their mouths to protect the veneers from damage.

If we determine that veneers are an excellent option for your smile, we will “prepare” both the natural tooth and the veneer. That involves slightly abrading and conditioning the tooth. Then, impressions are taken that guide the fabrication of your veneer. Provisional or temporary veneers may be placed to protect the prepared tooth while the permanent veneer is being made in a lab. After the veneer is completed, we will remove the provisional and check that the permanent looks and fits well before fixing it securely to the natural tooth.

Veneers FAQs

How do porcelain veneers transform a smile?

Porcelain veneers are custom-crafted restorations designed to refine the visible surface of teeth. Instead of reshaping the entire tooth, a precisely made ceramic layer is bonded to the front to enhance symmetry, color, and proportion. At Health 360 Dental in Chevy Chase, MD, Dr. Erick Hosaka and Dr. Valerie Cassis use veneers to correct concerns such as uneven edges, noticeable spacing, stubborn discoloration, and misshapen teeth. The result is a polished, natural-looking smile that blends seamlessly with your facial features.

What makes dental porcelain an ideal material?

Dental porcelain closely reflects the way natural enamel interacts with light. It offers subtle translucency and depth, preventing the flat or opaque appearance that some cosmetic materials can create. It is also highly durable and resistant to surface staining. These properties make porcelain especially well-suited for cosmetic enhancements that must look authentic in both bright and soft lighting conditions.

Will my natural teeth be heavily altered?

Modern veneers are thinner than ever, allowing for conservative preparation. Only a minimal amount of enamel is refined to ensure the restoration fits comfortably and does not appear bulky. Preserving natural tooth structure supports both strength and long-term oral health. At Health 360 Dental, maintaining as much healthy enamel as possible is always a priority.

What is the process like from consultation to placement?

Treatment begins with a comprehensive exam to confirm that teeth and gums are healthy. After discussing goals and reviewing options, the teeth are gently prepared, and impressions are taken. Temporary restorations may be placed to protect the teeth while your custom veneers are fabricated. Once completed, the veneers are evaluated for precise fit, shade harmony, and bite alignment before being securely bonded in place.

Are veneers only cosmetic, or do they improve function too?

While veneers are commonly associated with aesthetics, they can also restore structural integrity. Teeth that are chipped or worn may regain smoother surfaces and improved balance. In some cases, veneers help protect enamel from further wear, especially when combined with bite correction or protective appliances.

How durable are porcelain veneers over time?

Porcelain is engineered for strength and daily function. With consistent oral hygiene and routine professional care, veneers can serve patients well for many years. Longevity depends on habits such as avoiding excessive force from nail biting, ice chewing, or using teeth as tools. Regular checkups allow us to monitor their condition and address minor issues early.

What if I have old bonding or unsatisfactory veneers?

Patients who are unhappy with prior cosmetic work often seek corrective treatment. Drs. Hosaka and Cassis have experience restoring poorly shaped or worn restorations to achieve healthier function and more lifelike aesthetics. Replacing outdated bonding or bulky veneers can dramatically improve both comfort and appearance.

Do veneers require special maintenance?

Daily brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings remain essential. Veneers do not require complicated routines, but healthy gums are crucial for long-term success. Non-abrasive toothpaste and mindful oral habits help maintain their smooth surface and appearance.

Can teeth grinding affect veneers?

Yes. Grinding or clenching places stress on both natural enamel and restorations. If bruxism is present, a custom night guard may be recommended to protect your investment and prevent unnecessary wear.

How do I know if veneers are right for me?

The best way to determine candidacy is through a personalized consultation.
