Rebuild your smile: What to expect

Congratulations – you’ve already embarked on the process by visiting the online “home” of Drs Erick Hosaka and Valerie Cassis. We are glad you’re here and look forward to hearing from you. We encourage you to schedule an appointment at our office as soon as you can. During this appointment, one of our dentists will examine your mouth. Be prepared to discuss your concerns, preferences, and goals. Our dentists also welcome questions! Using information provided by you and collected during this visit, we may recommend:

  • Partial dentures – Made from porcelain, acrylic, and metal, these dentures are color-matched to surrounding teeth and gum tissue. So, they look natural. The dentures are held in place with specialized connectors attached to remaining healthy teeth – a good option for those with a grouping of missing teeth or teeth that need to be extracted.
  • Complete dentures – The concept is much the same as partials; only, with full dentures, we replace all teeth in an upper or lower jaw. The dentures do not connect to the remaining teeth (as there are no teeth to connect to). Instead, they are held in place due to natural suction or with the aid of products such as adhesives. It is critical to have your dentures checked for fit on an ongoing basis. Since tissues shrink and evolve with time, we can adjust the denture, so it continues to fit well.
  • Implant dentures – Dentures supported by implants do not rely on natural suction or denture products for their stability. Instead, the tooth- and gum-colored prosthetic is connected to implants that are placed in the jaw. These implants join to surrounding bone. So, once connected, the denture is “rooted” or firmly stabilized in the jaw by strategically positioned implants. Implants may also be used to replace a single tooth, a few scattered teeth, and many or a group of teeth.

We even offer immediate dentures.  Our dentists may place a temporary or provisional denture immediately after your teeth are extracted. In this way, as tissues heal, you never have to be seen in public without teeth! That also provides an opportunity for you to get accustomed to chewing and speaking with dentures while your permanent appliance is made. The permanent will replace the provisional after tissues have healed and swelling has subsided. You can then enjoy a perfect fit!

Partial & Complete Dentures FAQs

When are dentures recommended?

Dentures are recommended when multiple teeth are missing or when remaining teeth cannot be predictably restored. At Health 360 Dental in Chevy Chase, MD, Dr. Erick Hosaka and Dr. Valerie Cassis evaluate gum health, bone support, and overall oral condition before recommending partial or complete dentures. Replacing missing teeth supports facial structure, chewing ability, and speech clarity.

What is the difference between partial and complete dentures?

Partial dentures are designed for patients who still have healthy natural teeth remaining. The prosthetic teeth attach securely using precision connectors that anchor to existing teeth. Complete dentures, on the other hand, replace all teeth in either the upper or lower arch. They rely on carefully shaped bases that adapt to the contours of the gums for stability.

What are implant-supported dentures?

Implant-supported dentures attach to dental implants placed in the jawbone. Instead of depending solely on suction or adhesives, the denture connects to small anchors embedded in bone. This creates added security, reduces movement during chewing, and often improves confidence. Implant dentures are especially helpful for patients who have experienced shifting or looseness with traditional appliances.

How do modern dentures look compared to older versions?

Today’s dentures are made from advanced materials and designed using digital design techniques. The teeth are shaped and shaded to resemble natural enamel, and the gum-colored base is crafted to complement facial features. The goal is to achieve lifelike aesthetics and balanced proportions rather than the flat or artificial look associated with older dentures.

What are immediate dentures?

Immediate dentures are placed shortly after teeth are removed. This allows patients to avoid going without teeth during the healing phase. While tissues recover and swelling decreases, adjustments may be necessary. Once healing stabilizes, a final denture is fabricated for optimal fit and comfort.

Will dentures feel uncomfortable?

It is normal to experience an adjustment period. Speaking and chewing may feel different initially as muscles adapt. However, properly designed dentures should not cause persistent pain. Regular follow-up visits at Health 360 Dental allow refinements to ensure the appliance fits securely and comfortably.

Do dentures require special cleaning?

Dentures should be removed daily for cleaning. Gentle brushing with a non-abrasive cleanser helps remove debris and bacteria. Overnight soaking is often recommended to maintain shape and hygiene. For implant-supported options, cleaning techniques may vary slightly, and personalized instructions are provided.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures are durable, but they are not permanent. Over time, natural changes in gum tissue and bone may affect fit. Periodic relining or replacement may be necessary to maintain stability. Routine exams help ensure continued comfort and function.

Can dentures improve facial appearance?

Yes. Missing teeth can cause facial collapse and sagging around the mouth. Dentures restore vertical dimension and provide support for lips and cheeks, often creating a more youthful profile.

How do I know which denture option is right for me?

Choosing between partial, complete, immediate, or implant-supported dentures depends on your oral health, bone structure, and lifestyle preferences. At Health 360 Dental in Chevy Chase, MD, we provide a thorough consultation to design a solution tailored to your long-term comfort, appearance, and confidence.
